Small Business Credit Card Review – Advanta Credit Cards

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

When it comes to financing a small business, it’s important to have a clear idea of what it is you want in terms of rewards and privileges. I recently visited Creditorweb.com to compare credit card offers for Advanta Credit Cards.

Creditorweb keeps an updated feed of current offerings from Advanta. This time I narrowed my selection to the following 2 cards:

Advanta Platinum BusinessCard With Rewards

  • 0% APR for 15 months on balance transfers, 7.99% fixed APR thereafter
  • 7.99% Variable APR on purchases
  • Choice of 5% cash back or travel rewards
  • No annual fee and no limit on earnings
  • $0 fraud liability
  • Personalized with company name at top of card

and

Advanta Life of Balance Platinum Card

  • 2.99% fixed APR for life on balances transferred within 3 months, 9.99% on new purchases
  • Choice of 6% cash back or travel rewards
  • No annual fee and no limit on earnings
  • $0 fraud liability
  • Personalized with company name at top of card

Both cards also offer additional 1% rebate on online purchases. Since I’m looking to save interest immediately on a large purchase I recently made, I chose the Platinum With Rewards based on the 0% APR for 15 months. If interest rates were to rise above 7.99%, I could always apply for a separate business credit card for purchases.

Nemo Loans

Monday, March 26th, 2007

Everyone needs money at times; unexpected expenses, emergencies, or even planned purchases or activities that take more than you have in hand. Most people assume that there are only two options available:

  • Dip into your savings, or break the investment
  • Put it on a credit card.

Neither of these are particularly good; breaking an investment means you could have an opportunity loss, and credit cards have a high interest rate. Unless you expect to pay it off within a couple of months, credit cards can extract a high toll.

So what’s the alternative? There are a variety of secured loans that can be obtained quite easily, and at a reasonable interest rate. Here are some examples.

If you have a home improvement project, look for a home improvement loan. Financing is not difficult if you are working and you are able to afford repayments on a loan. Typically, these can be paid off over one to five years with a fixed monthly installment.

If you’re looking to buy appliances or furniture, a personal secured loan is a good option. This is typically given to people who’re employed by medium to large sized organizations, and could be secured by your savings or investments.

If you run a small business, check around for a self employed loan. You’ll need to provide business references and your statements of accounts and taxes, but you can get the loan sanctioned fairly fast.

These are examples; for your specific requirements, talk to your bank or financial advisor.

The Finance Forums

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

There are plenty of places online to discuss personal finances, but one community I’ve recently grown fond of is The Finance Forums. It’s only a small community, but it’s got an active and friendly member base and there’s no fear of flaming, no matter what issues you discuss.

Key areas I’ve found helpful especially include the debt management section. Check out some really good advice there when people are posting debt problems. The general finance section is also very good, and one of the busiest areas - it covers a lot of interesting subjects, such as generally home book-keeping, to teaching kids the value of saving money.

As I recently moved house I found comments on the mortgages board really helpful - I still made sure I talked to a mortgage broker before getting my first mortgage, but at least I could ask people about the confusing terminology about mortgages. That way, when I sought professional advice, at least I’d gotten a primer in the basics of the subject.

I’ll be looking out for more financial forums as I need them, but for the moment at least I’ve found a nice little community I can feel safe about asking complicated questions on.

Business Credit Card Offers

Saturday, February 17th, 2007

If you’ve ever tried to get a business loan, you’ll know that you have to stake you business or your house as a security on the loan. However, Business Credit Cards are an alternative way to finance your business and are ideal for small to medium businesses.

As you’d expect with any credit card, there are so many different offers around and its not easy finding credit cards for small businesses. In addition to the well known credit cards such as American Express, you check out the new business credit card offers to see if you can find an offer that matches your requirements better. There are a number of less well-known brands that have better offers than the big institutions, so watch out for them!

Debt Advice Discussion Forums

Saturday, February 17th, 2007

It seems that everyone is getting themselves into debt these days, or if they’re not getting into debt, they’re talking about it! Finding decent and useful debt advice is really difficult, as you’re not sure who’s giving the right advice.

You can imagine that banks are not the best people for giving advice due to the amount of money they make from loans, credit cards, mortgages, etc. So for some impartial debt help, its worth looking at a debt advice discussion forum. This is a great place for people to share ideas, tips, tricks and their stories on how they got themselves out of debt. For other advice, its always worth checking out a debt advice blog, as they can point you in the direction of debt resources.

Wall Street Journal Prime Rate

Saturday, February 17th, 2007

The Wall Street Journal Prime Rate (WSJ Prime Rate) is the interest rate that banks charge other banks for any loans that are taken out. The other banks are considered to be their prime business customers, which is where the name of the rate comes from. The rate is often used as a base rate by American banks for their loan products, allowing them to offer financial products that are profitable and competitive. Sometimes the banks will offer credit cards and loans with an interest rate below the Prime Rate to attract new business from good customers.

The Prime Rate Forecast is just a guess at the new rate based on Historical Prime Rate data. Find out just how popular this metric is by taking the prime rate online poll!

Loan Advice from Loan Wize

Monday, February 5th, 2007

Despite their advantages, there are also many dangers with secured loans, most notably the danger of losing your home. If you cannot repay the loan, then the lender can recover the loans amount through the sale of your property. Although you may be able to make the repayments right now, if you become unemployed or your income decreases, then you may end up with serious financial problems. If you can, it may be better to get an unsecured loan, credit card or remortgage than to secure credit against your property. Financially overstretching yourself will lead problems, so it is important that you think carefully before taking out a secured loan.
